Elena Stepanovna Kamyshnaya

Poet, member of the Union of Russian Writers, member of the Union of Journalists of Russia, Full Member of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, and Academician of the Petrovskaya Academy of Sciences and Arts (St. Petersburg).

The Don poet Elena Kamyshnaya was born, lives, and works in Rostov-on-Don. Raised in a humble working family among the descendants of Don Cossacks, she received a technical education and worked for many years as a process engineer, yet she always wrote poetry alongside her career. She wrote not for the sake of fame, nor as a mere craft, but because she could do nothing else. Her poetry is distinctive, sincere, and profound. Within it live the imagery of Cossack legends, and the echoes of Pushkin and Akhmatova can be heard; the Soviet era intertwines with modern events, human destinies, the whisper of prayer, pain, love, and faith.

Her first poetry collection, «The Distant Cry of the Last Cranes», was published in 1998, followed by the poetry book «My Angel» (1998).
In 2001, the book of poems «Life – A Swift Miracle» was published, illustrated with photographs by the renowned photographer Karp Grigoryevich Pashinyan, Member of the Union of Journalists and the Union of Designers of Russia, and Full Member of the International Association of Art (IAA) of UNESCO.

In 2003, the catalog «The Russian Orthodox Icon» (an anniversary edition of the Inva-Academy, Krasnodar, Moscow) was published, which included the poet's spiritual verses.

At the end of 2006, the book «Feather Grass Silks» was released, featuring new and selected poems alongside paintings inspired by Elena Kamyshnaya's verses, created by the Honored Artist of Russia, holder of the Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Order of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, Sergey Mikhailovich Isakov.

In May 2008, the Russian Book Salon was held at the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Paris. At the invitation of the Center, the poetry book «Feather Grass Silks» was successfully presented at the Salon, along with the international book project «The Element of Song» (Russia, France, USA), in the publication of which the poetess took part, dedicated to our compatriot, the heroine of France, Anna Yuryevna Smirnova-Marly.

In early 2011, with the blessing of the Archbishop of Rostov and Novocherkassk Panteleimon, the book «The Abode» was published. It collects the spiritual works of E. Kamyshnaya, in which, as a devout believer, she reflects on the eternal truths of the Gospel. Directed toward God, her poems are imbued with profound memory, confessional prayer, and the highest love for the Don region and Russia. The paintings on biblical subjects featured in the book, created by the artist, Honored Worker of the Arts of the RSFSR, and Member of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR, Dmitry Vasilyevich Bliznyuk, organically merge with the thematic fabric of the poems.

Songs and romances set to the verses of the Don poetess by contemporary composers have gained widespread recognition; they are performed in theatrical productions and concert programs, sung by soloists, folk choirs, and ensembles of the Don region and Russia, and have been included in the «Favorite Songs of Russia» album series by the People's Artist of Russia, Lyudmila Ryumina. Some have become laureates of All-Russian and regional festivals.

Over the years, Elena Kamyshnaya has been published in various national and regional periodicals and has participated in radio and television programs. Yet, in whatever genre the poetess works, her creativity is always connected to a sense of the Higher Realm, His presence on earth, and the freedom of the spirit.

In June 2012, the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society awarded Elena Stepanovna Kamyshnaya the «Order of Grand Duchess Holy Martyr Elizabeth Feodorovna» for her labors on behalf of the Russian Orthodox Church and her spiritual creative work.

The poet's name is included in the encyclopedia «Russia 21st Century. The Culture of the Don in the Third Millennium». The work of Elena Stepanovna is also featured on the Russian Literary Portal «Stihi.ru» (Elena Kamyshnaya / Stihi.ru).
