«The Supplication of the Lord in the Garden of Gethsemane»

Oil on canvas, 75х54, 2011
«The Supplication of the Lord in the Garden of Gethsemane» is an eternal theme sought by many artists. Before us stands a solitary figure in whom the earthly and the heavenly coexist. However, he is depicted not as mortally anguished or fearing approaching death, but as one who has already made the decision to face it for the salvation of humanity. The source of light in the form of a radiance surrounding the angel carrying the cup is a masterfully executed light accent that forms the center of the painting and its central idea.

«The Supplication of the Lord in the Garden of Gethsemane»
«Peter said to Him: "Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble." Jesus said to him: "Truly I say to you, that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."»

                       Matt., ch. 26, verses 33-34
Know, for the unsold soul –
Hosts of suffering,
Cry out, or do not cry –
We are all homeless.
Homeless in a world of gloom,
Insulted by words –
Without fear or repentance,
By godless deeds!
But, Lord! But, Righteous One –
The Foundation of creation!
I pray to Thee, grant us the wisdom
To attain repentance!

            ***
In the inevitability of fate
Let humility pour forth,
And let the heart remain wise
For the prayer of repentant tears.
What use are empty assurances?
Life is justified by trials.
The consciousness of the fall —
Words that strike like an arrow,
Where the judges in the verdict are themselves,
Conscience is the law for the soul,
Buried by the emptiness of vile days
Of unbelief.
O, let humility pour forth,
Then on the path of life
The soul shall not choke on anguish,
Nor shall the thread of love be torn.
Pride seizes the throat,
And though a mature mind is granted,
We fly through the maw of hell –
Our ragged wounds beyond all counting.

               ***
«By faith they are chosen, by hope they stand firm in their calling, and through patience they attain a good end.»

Saint Theophan the Recluse
The soul is filled
With despair,
Overcome by
Fears and doubts...
The vigil lamp and candle are lit –
And the darkness of destruction crawls away.
Once more the soul
Both hearkens and grieves,
And secretly yearns
For divine bliss,
Asking for hope,
For faith and love,
In the Transfigured
Light of Perfection.
How fleeting are
Earthly titles! –
Swept away to dust
With the passing of the age.
Only what remains
As an unearthly good –
The Lord's reward –
In the name of Man!

In their subjects, they convey the biblical tragedy of the eternal dissonance between two worlds—the heavenly and the earthly—intersecting at an invisible point with the substantive fabric of the verse.
